Time Commitment and Make Up Work Policy
What is the time commitment like for a member of the speech and debate team member?
The answer to this question is: it depends. Some students will want to spend all of their time working on speech and debate. Other students, especially those involved in a lot of activities at Westlake (and outside of Westlake), may only be able to work on speech and debate for twenty to thirty minutes each night. Usually, the more time students put into the work, the more competitive success they experience. I highly encourage each student to stay after school to practice. If a student is only planning on putting in work during the class (8th period), they may not improve nearly as much as students staying after school/working on speech and debate at home. The more feedback students can get on their craft, the better. Students are encouraged to ask family and friends for feedback.
If students miss a class/classes because they are competing at a tournament, are they allowed to make up work during the 8th period class?
Students who miss class to compete at a tournament may take tests/quizzes missed during 8th period. If a student is making up a test or quiz during 8th period, they must inform Mr. Uhler before 8th period begins that they will be missing class. Students may not do homework in the 8th period class in order to "catch up."
