Westlake Speech and Debate Director of Forensics

Joseph Uhler has been teaching in Austin for nineteen years. This is his sixth year at Westlake High School. The Westlake team has grown significantly during that time, from a team of around 20 to nearly 90 in 2020-2021. The Westlake team has experienced a considerable amount of success under Mr. Uhler's leadership. During the 2019-2020 season, three of Westlake's Public Forum Debate teams qualified for the Tournament of Champions. The team of Miles Dintzner and Jason Luo advanced to the final round of the TOC in Public Forum Debate. Miles and Jason also won the Florida Blue Key Round Robin. In 2018-2019, the team of Ali Slimi and Miles Dintzner won the TFA State Tournament in Public Forum Debate. Additionally, Ali and Miles advanced to the octafinal round of Public Forum at the Tournament of Champions. Maddie Szoo won fourth place at the Glenbrooks tournament in Original Oratory.
For thirteen years, he was the coach of the Anderson Speech and Debate Team. Under Mr. Uhler's leadership, the team grew from four students to over seventy-five. The team also became one of the top programs in Texas, finishing in the top ten in overall sweepstakes at TFA State four years in a row (2010-2013). During the 2013-2014 and the 2019-2020 competitive seasons, Mr. Uhler served as the Texas Forensic Association's President. In 2012, Mr. Uhler was awarded with the Kandi King Coach of the Year award at the Winston Churchill Tournament. In 2011, Mr. Uhler was recognized at the Grapevine Classic as the educator of the year, and he was also named Coach of the Year by the Tournament of Champions for Extemporaneous Speaking. In addition to coaching speech and debate, Mr. Uhler also teaches English at Westlake. Mr. Uhler lives in Austin with his wife, Trisha, his daughter, Treyna, and son, Bryson.
